Interview by Darcy Dillon & Katie Lynn Johnston

This week we have the special treat of sharing an interview with Mulberry’s winner in our first-ever art contest, Sandhya Vikram. Check out her submission and others’ work here.

What inspired this piece? Why did you choose to incorporate the hummingbird into your artwork?

I’m very much fond of nature and its beauty. It’s always my first priority to add a glimpse of nature in my artworks. Whether it’s flowers, greenery or birds, I get a lot of my inspirations from nature.

I chose to incorporate the hummingbird into my artwork because it’s a magnificent and colorful creation of  God. I believe the brilliant, glittering colors and elaborately specialized and metallic feathers are eye-catching, and an attractive experience for the viewers.

Is there something you most enjoy about working with mixed-media creations?

I do work in almost all media, including oils, acrylics, watercolor and resin, depending on the requirements of the artwork. But I enjoy working in mixed-media most because I don’t like to rely on one particular object. My friends used to call me “the jack of all trades” because, no matter what, I always find my way to accomplish my goals even if I’m short of some sort of materials. I also love to use 2D and 3D effects in my artworks and that can be only used in mixed-media.

Are there any other projects you're currently working on that you’re excited about?

I’m a person, who can never sit inactive for a long time period when it comes to creativity. I always like to do something to satisfy my creative cravings. In my spare time, I do design for books and magazines, and I’m currently working on some interesting projects for an upcoming exhibition in North Carolina.

Where can our readers follow your artistic journey?

I’m currently the owner of a Facebook and Instagram page by the name of Kesariya-Art. I chose this name for my creative world because it’s related to my mother’s name “Kesar,” and I believe I can’t think of any better name than this one.
